That night, Juana takes the pearl and tries to throw it into the sea, but Kino stops her and beats her.
At the beginning of chapter three, Kino and Juana have just found the largest pearl anyone in their village and nearby town could ever dream of. She understands, however, that she must help her family, and so she moves into her new home. Now that Kino and Juana are rich, everyone wants a hand out. He administers a powdered capsule and promises to return in an hour. . As Kino approaches, the trackers hear a cry.
